Los Angeles Animal Services has some great information about how to keep your pet safe on the 4th of July. They are also offering free I.D. tags. Fireworks are illegal in Los Angeles but unfortunately there are those who continue to make bad choices, so be prepared just in case.

Here are a few tips for your pet's comfort on the 4th of July:

  • Keep your pets indoors after dark. If you must let them out to potty after dark it should be done on leash only. You never know when that loud bang will go off and send your dog running. Just because she hasn't jumped the fence before doesn't mean she can't when she get scared.
  • Keep white noise going in the house. This can be a fan (or several) running, the tv or radio tuned to an off station so there is static, or even a white noise machine.
  • Use a dab of lavender oil on your dog's collar will help calm her (not for cats)
  • Rescue Remedy (the kind for pets) can be put in your pet's water or directly into their mouth (follow dosage instructions)
  • Feliway diffuser for cats or a dog appeasing pheromone like Comfort Zone can be purchased as a plug-in diffuser or a collar.
  •  Sound CD's like Through a Dog's Ear (there is also one for cats)
  • Play games your dog loves like fetch (yes, in the house) or give them a stuffed Kong toy or bully stick

Please stay safe and help your pets cope with all the noise.
